Mercedes has presented its latest concept car. The Vision AVTR is a car that not only runs on electricity, but also your brain thanks to a new technological interface.

The pioneering car was announced and presented at the IAA Mobility 2021, the world’s largest future mobility event, in Germany, but is still in the concept phase of development.

Both the interior and exterior of the car are inspired by science fiction and are incredibly futuristic, but the main feature that Mercedes presented was the new Brain Computer Interface (BCI) technology.

The technology

The drivers of the car will not use the device to actually drive the car. Instead, Mercedes is hoping that the BCI technology will allow drivers to control parts of the user interface.

For example, you could change the station on the radio station or use a different color for the interior lighting of the car, just by thinking about it.

Future hopes for the BCI technology system are that the driver can select a destination on the navigation system with just his thoughts. However, this development could still be decades away.

Britta Seeger, board member of Mercedes-Benz AG, stated that the company “sets another milestone in the merging of man and machine”.

“The BCI technology works completely independently of language and touch. This opens up revolutionary possibilities for intuitive interaction with the vehicle. In order for the BCI system to work, the driver has to wear some kind of helmet with portable electrons on the back of the head. ”She added.

The helmet and electrons record brain activity and take a minute to calibrate before the driver is directly connected to the vehicle.

The car then projects points of light onto the digital dashboard, to which the driver’s brain then reacts to the visual stimuli, a reaction that is then measured by the head unit.

The helmet then analyzes the driver’s brain waves to identify which of the points of light the driver is focusing on. This would mean that the function that the driver had selected would then begin.

A schedule for when this technology will be available in the cars has not yet been set by Mercedes, although the technology has yet to prove effective and safe.

The design

The main inspiration for the design of the concept car is the blockbuster film Avatar. With its futuristic wheels recreating the “seeds of the sacred tree” in the film and a stunning array of photographic interior designs that can transform into a number of different avatar scenes.
