Blackburn-based engineering giant Assystem has acquired Schofield Lothian, a London-based consultancy that primarily specializes in UK rail projects and employs 80 technical consultants, for an undisclosed amount.

With this acquisition, Assystem expands and diversifies its presence in the UK.

Schofield Lothian’s offering encompasses four distinct areas: Consent and Engagement; Environmental services; Project management; and commercial management.

Schofield Lothian’s main business offering in permits, engagement and environmental services will bring new capabilities to Assystem, while Assystem will bring Schofield Lothian and the UK public transport sector his experience in digitizing engineering and managing large rail projects in France, the Middle East and more recently India.

The acquisition will thus enable Assystem to offer a wider range of end-to-end services for energy transition projects in the UK, including existing customers involved in the supply of new nuclear power plants, small modular reactors and renewable energies as well as hydrogen.

With the consents, commitment and environmental services of Schofield Lothian, Assystem is now able to oversee energy projects from early stage through to completion.

Assystem will also become a major player in engineering services for the UK transportation sector, meaning that Schofield Lothian’s existing customers in this sector will benefit from a wider range of services.

Due to Assystem’s digital capabilities, Schofield Lothian’s teams will be able to apply Assystem’s engineering to projects through the digital approach and to draw on his expertise in digital methods and tools. You will also be able to benefit from the safety and risk related skills developed by CRA, another UK company in the Assystem group.

Assystem is dedicated to making the energy transition and digital revolution a reality, developing and delivering energy and infrastructure projects that drive the net-zero economy.

While its focus is on decarbonised energy – nuclear as well as renewables and hydrogen – it also applies its know-how to the public transport and defense sectors, which require the same high level of skills in terms of complex infrastructure technology to contribute to the decarbonisation of the economy.

Thomas Branche, Senior Vice President, Energy Transition and Infrastructures, Assystem, said, “Schofield Lothian is a highly respected and established consulting firm of success.

“This combination of Schofield Lothian’s high-end permitting and engagement and environmental services skills with Assystem’s technical skills and expertise will be a real asset to energy transition projects in the UK. At the same time, the merger creates an important partner for the UK transport sector, helping to build safe, clean and efficient transport networks. “

Kevin Corcoran, Managing Director of Schofield Lothian, said, “We are very excited to be part of the Assystem Group – the acquisition brings together two complementary companies that are culturally aligned, with both companies sharing similar values.

“With the digitization and engineering know-how of Assystem, we can expand our services and accelerate our growth in the rail and infrastructure sector, which offers added value to both our customers and our employees.

“We are also pleased about the opportunities it offers our employees in terms of their professional and personal development through working with our new colleagues at Assystem.”
