Dandara unveils plans for 1,500 new properties and a enterprise hub in Birmingham

Industry veterans launch new hospitality industry consultancy

A new urban regeneration project with hundreds of apartments and its own business and community center is planned for Birmingham.

Developer Dandara has detailed proposals for his Cheapside program in Digbeth, which could also help breathe life into parts of the River Rea.

The company, which led the Aston Place apartment project next to the city’s Alpha Tower office building, plans to build more than 1,500 apartments and new public spaces on either side of a river.

A flexible hub offering car sharing, parking spaces, bicycle storage, bicycle repairs, charging stations for electric vehicles and private parking spaces, as well as fitness facilities is also included in the plans.

The program concludes with the Henry Bradford Center, which is aimed at startups and small businesses focused on innovation and entrepreneurship and available to the wider community.

The name is a nod to the 18th century landowner and entrepreneur who helped bring commerce to this part of Birmingham.

The project would be built on three adjacent lots that currently contain industrial buildings on land adjacent to Moseley Street, Rea Street South and Charles Henry Street.

These proposals for Cheapside are some of the first detailed plans to be unveiled as part of Birmingham City Council’s larger Rea Valley Urban Quarter project, first announced in 2019.

The 180-acre master plan includes a series of five interconnected regeneration plans that include housing, commercial and new green spaces alongside an emphasis on biking and walking in the Digbeth and China Town districts and a renewed focus on the neglected Rea River.

Leanne Allen, Associate Director at Dandara and Head of the Cheapside Program, said, “We have been working with the Birmingham City Council for a while so it is great to finally boast all the ambition and hard work we have done into this development.

“This is really a long-term vision for the Cheapside area and for Dandara. We love this part of Birmingham and can’t wait to start new stakeholder conversations this summer as we move forward with our plans.”

The Birmingham-based firm Glenn Howells Architects and the planning firm Turley are also working on the project.

A public consultation on the project will start later this summer.
