From Fb, to Meta | World Branding Discussion board

Facebook, Meta, Metaverse, VR, Virtual Reality

Facebook said changing its company name to meta would better “encompass” what the company is doing. The brand is expanding its reach beyond social media to areas such as virtual reality (VR) and expects to go even further in the future.

What is affected …

The change does not apply to the individual platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, but only to the parent company that owns them.

Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg announced the new name when he unveiled plans to build a “Metaverse” – an online world where people can play, work and communicate in a virtual environment, often with VR headsets.

Why the change?

He said the existing brand name “may not represent everything we do today, much less in the future,” and needs to change.

“I hope that over time we will be perceived as a metaverse company and I want to anchor our work and our identity on what we are working towards,” he said at a virtual conference. “We are now viewing and reporting on our business as two different segments, one for our family of apps and one for our work on future platforms.

“As part of this, it is time for us to introduce a new corporate brand that encompasses everything we do to reflect who we are and what we want to build,” he added.

The company also unveiled a new sign on Thursday at its Menlo Park, Calif. Headquarters, replacing the thumb-up “Like” logo with a blue infinity shape.

Mr Zuckerberg said the new name shows that over time, users will no longer need Facebook to use the company’s other services.

More about ‘Meta’

The word “meta” comes from the Greek and means “beyond”. To an outsider, a metaverse might look like a version of VR, but some people believe it could be the future of the internet.

Instead of sitting at a computer, people in a metaverse can use a headset to step into a virtual world that connects all sorts of digital environments. There is hope that the virtual world can be used for virtually anything from work, games, and concerts to socializing with friends and family.

Facebook has announced that it will start trading its shares under the new stock ticker MVRS from December 1st.
