Digital Advertising and marketing Knowledgeable Explores: Do Area Extensions Actually Have an effect on search engine optimization?

Digital Marketing Expert Explores: Do Domain Extensions Really Affect SEO?

London, United Kingdom – January 21, 2022 – In recent years, digital strategy has become critical to the success of any modern business – being on page one of Google can have a huge impact on sales and overall performance. Knowing this, business owners are paying more attention to domain names and domain extensions — but how much does a domain extension really impact SEO efforts?

According to SEO specialists at The Brains, in reality, domain extensions probably have no impact on technical SEO. However, if you look at all the top searches, you’ll see that the top spots almost always belong to .com or local domains, including .co.uk. However, this is probably more down to branding and human perception than SEO – people in general tend to trust .com domains, so they choose them over lesser-known domains, meaning these businesses get more traffic and conversions as a result. Knowing this, it’s far wiser to think of domain extensions as a branding exercise – and business owners should focus on building a domain identity that fits their unique business.

It’s also worth noting that there are far more important factors to consider when trying to optimize your website for SEO – including relevant, well-targeted keywords, long, regular content, accurate and compelling metadata, and loading speed. Additionally, offsite SEO elements can make a big difference – for example, a website with an .io extension and ten backlinks will outperform a website with a .com extension and zero backlinks – as with most SEO issues, the issue is complex and domain extensions must be considered alongside a variety of other elements.

James Speyer, Senior Account Strategist for SEO, talks about domain extensions and their overall relevance to SEO:

“There are a million ways to optimize your company’s website – and many of them are far more powerful and important in terms of SEO than a domain extension. Rather than focusing too much on domain extensions from a technical perspective, it pays to look at them from a branding perspective instead. Keep in mind that a company with a .com ending simply has more clout than a lesser-known ending—it looks more official. For clients, we always recommend a .com or .co.uk domain from a branding perspective, but not necessarily from an SEO perspective.” – James Speyer, Senior Account Strategist for SEO, The Brains
