The Brush Chamber of Commerce held their quarterly Buzz around Brush! Event on Monday, September 20, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Bank of Colorado common room in Brush.

The event always serves as an opportunity to network within the community, but this particular meeting also served as a course of sorts: teaching local business owners how to improve their social media habits and better market their businesses.

City of Brush Building Technician David Basil was asked to share his experiences in digital marketing and social media and offer advice on how businesses can improve their online presence. He emphasized the fact that social media works simply, free of charge and constantly for the company, even when the physical location is closed and employees are free.

“I just feel like we can help people get their little business out there. In a city like this in particular, it is really profitable, ”said Basil, who was happy to share his knowledge with the community.

Former Home Inspector and Owner of Elevated Home Inspections, Basil taught attendees about the importance of brand awareness, posting on social media, using hashtags, and interacting with people who comment on posts. He also encouraged the group to take full advantage of Google My Business by creating a company profile and encouraging customers to leave honest reviews to improve their company’s rating. Basil even created a document with step-by-step instructions on how to create this profile.

Matt Gordon, Executive Director of the Brush Area Chamber of Commerce, appreciated Basil’s informative presentation.

“David Basil did a pretty cool social media presentation for some companies,” said Gordon. “Some people there were painstakingly scribbling notes about how to take over their Google accounts (My Business) and how to do some other cool social media tricks and tips that David shared.”

One of the tips Basil shared was that not all posts on social media need to be related to the business itself as it is always beneficial to interact with customers and prospects. People are humorous about social media accounts and like to see companies celebrate “random” holidays like National Coffee Day.

Basil named Sher’s Tax & Accounting LLC as an example. Taxes are commonly associated with stress. So, when you make fun posts in addition to posts about taxes, positive thoughts will become associated with the business.

Sherry Hernandez, the owner of Sher’s Tax & Accounting, said she learned a lot of helpful information from Basil. With his helpful guidance, she’s already set up her Google My Business profile and is working on implementing the new social media tips she’s learned.

“My experience was great. It was very informative and I learned a lot. I’m really excited about the emails David sent me to get me started on my website and all of my media promotion because it’s almost my main season right now, ”said Hernandez. “I now have my Google Account (My Business) and am ready to go! Hopefully we can start using hashtags and all that good stuff to get it all out. I’m using what David has given me and I think it’s a positive perspective (change) that will make my business a success. “

The next brush buzz! Event is expected to take place in November or December. However, Gordon is currently seeking feedback from the community regarding the best time to meet. About a dozen people attended the September event, and Gordon would like to see more visitors at future events.

“I think we still have room for improvement and I hope I can work on it in the future. I would love real feedback when people want to get together to network and connect with local businesses. And whether the current setup that we have right now works for you or whether you have other thoughts, ”said Gordon. “I would love to see how we can better serve our members and the business community at large with events like this.”
