Cornwall’s very first prestige cycling event is less than a month away.

The Grand Depart of the Tour of Britain is leaving Penzance on September 5th and support from local businesses is picking up speed.

Stephen Rushworth, Cornwall Council Business Portfolio Owner, said: “We have an exciting partnership with the pros, local cycling experts Saint Piran, who are teaming up for the race. They will provide authoritative blogs that will raise the profile of the event and provide training programs for young cyclists.

“The Cornwall Tour of Britain is also heavily sponsored by the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group, operators of the Scillonian III ferry and Skybus. And we have other supporters from different sectors – the ecotech company Cornish Lithium Ltd. Mining to reduce fossil fuel needs, Talent Tide in Pool recruitment agency, Shore Partnership real estate agency based in Devoran, Buttermilk family confectionery company that won awards for their fudge, brittle and chocolate, Tiki Tonga coffee roasters and Craft Lager brewers cheers will create an après-race feeling.

“This is a very common expression of support, but there is still plenty of time for other companies to support Cornwall’s largest free-view sporting event ever.”

The Tour of Britain race will be eye-catching for Cornwall, showing its commitment to carbon free transportation and tackling climate change, a host of world-class cycling facilities and how well Cornwall handles major events.

Sponsorship companies will have their logos and messages on banners along the route that will be seen by thousands of viewers and on over five hours of live TV coverage on ITV4, much of which will be filmed from the air. This will be the longest Cornish sports television program to be broadcast worldwide on the Eurosport satellite channel, as well as syndicated coverage in sports bulletins in the UK and around the world. Radio 5 Live and Cornwall local stations will also cover from flag to destination.

Sponsors will help cover the initial cost of starting the tour, but will also add a greater benefit to the local economy, estimated at a minimum of £ 3.4 million.

Stuart Reid, CEO of the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group’s race sponsor, said an earlier departure had been arranged for Sciillonian III on September 5th to better fit the Penzance race start: informing them of the event and ensuring they all reach their destination and the cargo arrives at the islands. “

The ‘Grand Depart’ is in Penzance at 11am and all day cyclists battle the 111 mile route through Cornwall to be the first to cross the winning line in Bodmin on Sunday afternoon. Penzance and Bodmin are planning additional celebrations, including fireworks and a music festival, and both will have giant television screens to capture all of the racing action.
