Engineering consultancy finishes work on fire-damaged historic golf clubhouse

Complex engineering work by engineering firm Will Rudd Davidson has been completed on the fire-damaged clubhouse at Glasgow Golf Club.Complex engineering work by engineering firm Will Rudd Davidson has been completed on the fire-damaged clubhouse at Glasgow Golf Club.

Glasgow Golf Club, the ninth oldest in the world, enlisted the restoration expertise of Will Rudd Davidson after a fire in 2018 devastated large parts of the three-story building in Bearsden on the outskirts.

In order to save as much of the listed building as possible, the company carried out extensive statics measurements of the remaining parts. These investigations shaped the overall renovation of the existing building, which included the preservation of all existing exterior masonry facades, steel lintels and the load-bearing interior masonry.

The workers were faced with the additional challenge of integrating a new structure into an existing building and combining historical and modern materials.

The completed clubhouse now includes a large, modern extension to the rear of the property with a newly installed free-standing steel terrace from which members can enjoy the view over the first tee.

MJ O’Shaughnessy, General Manager of Will Rudd Davidson Glasgow, which was founded in 1982, said: “This has been such a prestigious project that Glasgow Golf Club is one of the oldest golf clubs in the world, heritage.

“The conservation engineering work was extremely complex, and since we could design both the temporary and permanent works on our behalf, we were able to add the added value of our conservation experience and preserve the main shell of the existing building, which could otherwise have collapsed.

“We are very pleased that club members can finally move out of their temporary accommodation and return to the magnificent setting of the clubhouse.”
