FT books: April edition
From resetting ideas about the way we work to productive disagreements, here are this month’s top titles.

Andrew Hills Management Challenge

“Connectionist” pioneers of artificial intelligence suggest that computers will evolve to learn human behavior. This is the future Kazuo Ishiguro envisioned in his new novel Klara and the Sun: Automation has already ousted many high-profile professionals: some have reluctantly accepted the inevitable; others hold onto their careers as the robots advance.

As I write in this week’s column, successfully managing this transition requires precautions, guidelines, preparation – and a sense of perspective. For my Management challengeTry your hand at science fiction. Imagine a utopian workplace of the future where workers and machines live happily. Please no novels – at most the outline of a story – to [email protected].

in the further readingTo celebrate the launch of this year’s FT / McKinsey Business Book of the Year award – and the sister Bracken Bower award that provides a platform for young business writers – we’ve published a list of titles recommended by business writers. They range from the upcoming Doom by Niall Ferguson to the Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. Cheer up: it can never happen.

Jonathan Moules’ messages from the business school

Diversity is a constant challenge for all types of jobs, which makes it relevant for business schools. Do the educators manage to practice what they teach? Read the FT Responsible Business Education report.

Green politics is another global challenge facing the business school faculty. Research by Willy Legrand, professor of hospitality management at IUBH Business School, reported in the FT that only one of the nine largest international hotel chains has taken measures in line with the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance to comply with the Paris intergovernmental agreement on climate change.

In other business news, the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business is looking for a new dean after Scott DeRue emailed alumni, staff and students an email announcing his departure on May 23. DeRue, who comes to an end after a five-year term, will take on a senior position in the private sector, but did not provide any further details on that role.

My recommended reading this week comes back to the subject of diversity. It’s an interview with Bukola Adisa, founder of the Career Masterclass, a company that advises companies on how to better involve black, Asian and ethnic minority women and why this makes good business sense.
