Montreal’s ability to attract tech companies shows no sign of decline.

India’s Tata Consultancy Services is expanding its Montreal presence by moving to a new downtown work area at 1255 Phillips Square, just off Ste-Catherine St. The information technology company, a unit of the Tata Group conglomerate, plans to hire around 100 people immediately More than 500 over three years, according to a statement released Thursday.

Barring unforeseen construction delays, the new 9,500 square meter facility is expected to open next month. However, employees will continue to work from home until the office use caps are lifted in the provinces. TCS doesn’t say how much it is investing in the redesigned space.

Known as the “Delivery Center”, the downtown hub offers services based on technologies such as cloud computing, advanced analytics, machine learning and artificial intelligence. TCS, which operates a similar facility in Toronto, plans to use the new center to support existing and future customers in industries such as travel and transportation, retail and financial services.

TCS already has around 250 employees in the Montreal area, said Soumen Roy, executive director and country head for Canada, in a telephone interview. One of the main competitors is the information technology group CGI Inc. from Montreal.

The decision to expand the capacity in Montreal is the result of a “long-term strategic plan,” said Roy, praising the city’s “educational ecosystem”. Montreal “is emerging as a very powerful technology and artificial intelligence center that extends and complements what we are trying to do in the market.”

TCS is a unit of India’s largest multinational corporation and has over 469,000 consultants in 46 countries. The company had sales of $ 22 billion for the last fiscal year ended March 2020. It has been active in Canada for three decades and has offices in Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver.

TCS did not reach out to the Quebec government for subsidies in preparation for its expansion, Roy said.

“There is a lot of thought going on before we actually go into a market,” he said. “We took the time to move to very different countries and we never left a market. Montreal was on our strategic roadmap. That is the genesis of the decision. It’s a market choice. “
