IKEA launches new forest agenda for 2030 for improved forest management

IKEA announces an agenda to further improve biodiversity, curb climate change and drive innovation to use wood even more intelligently

The IKEA For many years the company has endeavored to use its size and reach to eradicate forest degradation and deforestation around the world.

A new forest agenda for 2030 is announced to advance work to further improve biodiversity, mitigate climate change and encourage innovation to use wood even smarter – as pressures on the world’s forests continue to mount.

The company has now achieved its goal of a more sustainable source, to be achieved by 2020. Today more than 98% of the wood used in IKEA products is either FSC certified or recycled.

The Forest Positive Agenda for 2030 includes taking the lead and making responsible forest management the norm worldwide that goes beyond the wood purchased for the IKEA store.

Improving biodiversity, supporting the rights and needs of people who depend on forests throughout the wood supply chain, and addressing a climate footprint larger than our own.

Driving innovation to use wood smarter and store carbon for as long as possible by designing all products from the start so that they can be reused, refurbished, remanufactured and ultimately recycled.

Make sure at least a third of the IKEA wood range is made from recycled wood.
Ensure that sourcing of other raw materials at critical risk of deforestation (mainly certain agricultural products), which make up around 3% of IKEA’s raw material footprint, does not contribute to deforestation or the transformation of natural ecosystems.

All of the wood used in IKEA products comes from responsibly managed forests that do not contribute to deforestation. Keep using only wood from more sustainable sources that have been certified by the most credible global third-party certification systems.

“At IKEA, we want to make responsible forest management the norm, stop deforestation, improve biodiversity and support people whose livelihoods depend on forests. Responsibly managed forests also play an important role in mitigating climate change. By enforcing stringent requirements and working with various organizations around the world, we have helped advance the forest sector. Nevertheless, the pressure on the world’s forests and the surrounding ecosystems is increasing. Now is the time to take an even more holistic approach to protecting and supporting these important resources for future generations, ”says Jon Abrahamsson Ring, CEO of the Inter IKEA Group.

IKEA will continue to drive innovation and develop new ways of using wood intelligently, for example through the increased use of lightweight constructions.

“Wood is one of the main materials in IKEA products and an integral part of our heritage. It’s durable, renewable, recyclable, and beautiful. As a major consumer of wood, we have been working consciously for many years to use our size and global reach as drivers for positive changes in the forest sector, especially in regions that are facing challenges. Wood is also a key material for the future and to achieve our ambitions to become circular and climate positive, ”says Ulf Johansson, manager for wood supply and forestry.

Last year the Inter IKEA Group announced an investment of 200 million euros to accelerate the transformation and become climate-positive. A significant portion of this investment is aimed at removing carbon from the atmosphere through reforestation, restoration of degraded forests and better forest management practices.
