LEGO Group declares new carbon emission discount aim

The LEGO Group announces a new goal to reduce CO2 emissions

The LEGO Group is committed to a new target to reduce carbon emissions in line with the Paris Agreement's most ambitious trajectory of 1.5 ° C.

The LEGO Group has committed to reducing its absolute CO2 emissions by 37% by 2032 to ensure the company does its part to limit the effects of climate change. The target was approved by the Science-Based Target initiative in line with the levels needed to keep global warming below 1.5 ° C, the most ambitious target of the Paris Agreement.

The company's target includes emissions from its own operations, which is 10% of total emissions and includes energy consumption in its factories, offices and stores, and from its supply chain, which is 90% of emissions including areas such as raw materials and distribution.

Tim Brooks, VP, Environmental Responsibility, said, “Climate change is one of the greatest risks to society and the planet that our children will inherit. We are committed to building a better planet for future generations. This means stepping up efforts to reduce CO2 emissions across our entire value chain. "

The company will continue to invest in sustainable materials research to reduce the carbon footprint of LEGO products and packaging and to make their business more circular. As part of the LEGO Group's Engage-to-Reduce program launched in 2014, the company will continue to work with suppliers. They will be supported and assisted in reducing their own impact, increasing energy efficiency throughout the operation, and producing renewable energy in factories and ensure the sourcing of 100% renewable energy in factories, offices and stores, and increase investment in renewable energy capacities in all regions where the company operates with the aim of operating climate-neutral operations by the end of 2022.

Ultimately, the company will design offices and factories to the highest environmental standards.

Commenting on the planned activities to achieve the goal, Brooks said, “Companies must play a central role in the transition to a low-carbon economy. By setting an ambitious goal to reduce CO2 emissions, we will not only continue to improve our CO2 efficiency, but also invest in promoting innovation and energy efficiency across our value chain. We want to make sure that not only are we doing better, but that we are doing our part to protect children and the planet from the risks of global warming. "

The LEGO Group recently announced a $ 400m / £ 300m investment over three years to accelerate their sustainability efforts. The funds will be used to drive meaningful, long-term change that aligns with two United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: # 4 Quality Education and # 12 Responsible Consumption and Production.

As part of this investment, the company will continue to inspire and work with children, parents, employees and partners around the world to take action on climate change issues. An example of how the LEGO Group helps mobilize children is the Build the Change program.

Through the “Build the Change” activities, children get to know sustainability topics such as biodiversity or climate change before they develop and exchange their ideas and visions for solving these current challenges. The ideas are collected and shared with policy makers to ensure that the children's voices are heard. The company hopes the children's ideas will help inspire leaders who can make a difference.

Brooks commented, “We know we cannot move global warming alone, so we are committed to continuing to work with our suppliers, partners, children, employees and fans to make a positive impact on the planet and the children too inspire today to become the builders of a more sustainable future. "
