Burger King pulls another ploy against their fast food brothers

Burger King's Halloween campaign, "Scary Places," features creepy abandoned Wendy's and McDonald's

Burger King is a huge fan of trolling his rivals on Halloween. Who could forget Scary Clown Night or the time BK dressed up as? MC Donalds in queens?

This year BK and agency MullenLowe US have done another trick against their fast food brothers with a campaign called "Scary Places". The focus is on five abandoned fast food restaurants in the United States that are showing up in ads. The chains aren't named, but it's clear from the ads below that they are old McDonalds and Wendy Locations.

The first ad reads, "Beware of places that are never on fire." The second ad reads, "Legend has it that they never grilled flames."

“Why are these places so scary? When they were open, they didn't deliver the beloved flame grill flavor, ”says Burger King. “Some nights you can even hear the sizzling screams from the flat top. What could be more scary than that? "

The campaign goes beyond advertisements and includes a location-based couponing function in which the BK app is involved. Burger King uses push notifications to the BK app as well as to social media and this landing page to direct people to the five actually abandoned restaurants. By using geolocation, those who drive past them will then be rewarded with a voucher for a free Whopper.

The abandoned restaurants are in Houston, Texas, Dayton, Ohio, Birmingham, Alabama; McHenry, Illinois; and Johnston, Rhode Island.

"Nothing is more scary to us than a place that never grills flames," said Ellie Doty, director of marketing for Burger King North America. "While Halloween looks a bit different this year, we're taking it in a way that keeps an eye on the safety of guests in this day and age. A good fear and a delicious reward for a Whopper with a flame grill."

The ads should appear in local newspapers such as the Chicago Tribune, Northwest Herald, Providence Journal, Dayton Daily News, Birmingham News and the Houston Chronicle.
