Persil launches new liquid formulation in 100% recyclable bottles

Persil is relaunching its liquid laundry detergent with packaging and formulation changes to significantly reduce the environmental impact of the product

Persil, the UK drycleaning brand, has announced the launch of its new liquid formulation, Unilever's first product in the UK and Ireland to be launched with a “Clean Future” vision. The new product is both stain resistant and more environmentally friendly as both the packaging and the formulation have been changed.

The bottles are now made of 50% recycled post-consumer plastic, are 100% recyclable and the dosing ball previously supplied with each bottle has been removed. This reduces the amount of virgin plastic in Persil bottles by more than 1,000 tons annually.

The new liquid formulation consists of plant-based stain removers and biodegradable ingredients that come from renewable or recycled sources. With a formula that is 23% concentrated, the bottles are smaller, so there are around 19% fewer trucks on the road every year – both of which further reduce the product's carbon footprint.

Persil's eco restart is the UK's first innovation under Unilevers The commitment of Clean Future, a groundbreaking innovation program and a $ 1 billion investment developed by the company's Home Care division to transform the way some of the world's best-known cleaning and laundry products are made, manufactured and made be packaged, fundamentally change.

Clean Future is unique in its intent to embed circular economy principles in both packaging and product formulations on a global brand scale to reduce their carbon footprint.

Unilever has also boldly committed to halving the use of virgin plastic in packaging, and collecting and processing more plastic packaging than was sold by 2025.

Charlie Beevor, Vice President Home Care at Unilever in the UK and Ireland, said: “Clean Future is our vision to transform the sustainability of our global cleaning and laundry brands. Our new Persil Liquid is just the beginning of delivering products that are both effective and environmentally friendly. "

We have seen unprecedented demand for our home care products over the past few months and need to maintain the momentum as we continue to customize and develop our products to ensure we continue to lead the way in sustainability. As an industry, we must end our dependence on fossil fuels and we are proud to lead the indictment. "
