Evian and Rothy’s retains plastic waste within the financial system and out of nature

Evian and Rothy's keep plastic waste in the economy and out of nature

Evian and Rothys work together to create a limited edition tennis-inspired capsule collection made from recycled Evian water bottles

Evian water and Rothys announced a new partnership to transform the brand’s water bottles collected in September into a limited edition, tennis-inspired capsule collection from Rothy’s.

With a shared mission to reduce plastic waste in business and nature, Evian and Rothy’s will create Evian bottles, the first capsule collection of its kind to be launched between August 30th and 12th during the peak of the tennis season in September 2022.

Every September almost ten tons of plastic produced at this annual event is recycled from landfills. This year Evian and Rothy’s pledge to work together to find their own circular solution for some of the diverted waste.

Their goal is to give the brand’s bottles collected at the event a chic second life as part of a capsule collection of Essentials for the Square, made using Rothy’s low-waste, circular manufacturing method. With an active lifestyle in mind, the range of products can include anything from equipment to accessories.

The collected Evian bottles are mixed with other recycled plastic bottles and then turned into soft, washable thread, which Rothy’s then uses to knit each item in the capsule collection into shape – leaving minimal waste. The design team is researching everything from headwear to tennis bags and potentially testing new categories for the brand.

With both Evian and Rothy’s pursuing closed futures, the partnership follows both brands’ commitments to be circular through 2025 and 2023 respectively. The packaging allows Evian to bring its spring water to consumers and preserve the uniqueness of the quality of Evian’s natural spring water – but the brand believes that this shouldn’t be at the expense of the environment.

The brand is climate neutral and all bottles are fully recyclable. Today Evian bottles contain an average of 40% rPET across the range and the company is committed to making all of its plastic bottles from 100% recycled plastic2 by 2025, using a “circular approach” to plastic use. The company was also officially certified as a B Corp ™ this spring.

“Evian offers natural, healthy hydration with sustainability in mind. As a Certified B Corp and CO2-neutral brand, we are always looking for new ways to reduce our footprint even further. That’s why we’re excited to partner with Rothy’s, a company that shares our commitment to circular economy, to create a collection of capsules made from recycled Evian bottles for our consumers to enjoy, ”said Smeeta Khetarpaul, Marketing Director of Evian US. “There is no better partner to bring something like this to life than Rothy’s sustainability pioneers.”

By designing with recycled materials, cycle is an inherent benefit that is anchored in Rothy’s business model. Rothy’s makes every product in its own workshop and uses world-class knitting technology to make shoes and accessories with almost no waste.

As part of its mission, Rothy’s announced its promise in March 2021 to achieve circular production by 2023, pioneering shoe recycling technology to incorporate double-recycled materials into new products. By investing in nature-based CO2 reductions for every nautical mile, Rothy’s will also be CO2 neutral by 2023.

“The Rothy’s x Evian partnership is an opportunity for our team to create a unique capsule collection and push the boundaries of Rothy’s design and manufacturing capabilities. As Rothys approaches our goal of circular production, we look forward to developing and scaling innovative recycling solutions. The circular design starts where the life of another product might have ended, and we look forward to turning recycled Evian bottles into beautiful, high-quality pieces. ”- Saskia van Gendt, Head of Sustainability at Rothy.
