Asos and Primark announce new inexperienced pledges
Asos and Primark have both announced their desire to pursue a more sustainable fashion route. Companies have a number of goals that they want to achieve in the years to come in order to create a better brand.
What is Asos doing for sustainability?
Asos aims to achieve net zero impact on the environment by 2030. Asos has announced its new environmental and social goals. They include:
- Reducing the CO2 emissions generated by clothing production and deliveries
- By 2030, ensure that all private label products are made from sustainable or recycled materials
- Giving customers more information about their supply chain
- Recruiting a more diverse workforce, including 50% women across the leadership team
Nick Beighton, Asos CEO, said, “We need to work with our partners to offset any minimal cost increases we expect from this.” He added that he expects more consumers to choose Asos as a result of these commitments. “The responsibility for a sustainable future rests with us all and companies must lead the way.”
What is Primark doing for sustainability?
Primark says its clothing will be made from recycled or “more sustainable materials” by the same date (2030). The budget retailer has also promised to cut its CO2 emissions in half across all of its operations.
In a statement, Primark also said it will make its clothes more durable so they can be recycled and last longer – without raising prices.
Primark announced it would “seek a living wage for workers in its supply chain,” but did not specify how high that wage would be in the countries Where it has employees or if that would happen. Primark has 397 stores in 14 countries and employs around 70,000 people.
The company’s chief executive officer Paul Marchant said, “Sustainability should not be offered at a price that only a minority can afford. “Because of our personality, we believe we have the opportunity to make more sustainable fashion choices affordable for everyone.” Primark announced that it will eliminate single-use plastics in its own operations.
