JanSport publicizes upcoming launch of the Recycled SuperBreak

JanSport has announced the upcoming launch of the Recycled SuperBreak, the brand's first backpack made from 100% recycled fabric. The market launch marks another milestone on the brand's path to becoming a leader in the development and manufacture of sustainable backpacks. The new package will be available from May 1st.
The JanSport Recycled SuperBreak, each containing 20 plastic water bottles with the value of recycled plastic, uses 900 denier polyester Cordura eco-friendly fabrics, which are made from post consumer waste such as plastic water and soda bottles.
The sophisticated recycling technology used to produce this environmentally conscious fabric decomposes plastic during a manufacturing process and converts it into high-quality spun polyester yarn. The use of these recycled materials in product development has less of an impact on climate change than the corresponding pure polyester.
The careful processing and manufacture of the recycled SuperBreak is also a key driver of JanSport's sustainability efforts. All of the machines used in the manufacture of the recycled SuperBreak use renewable energy from a solar system, and the manufactured environmentally conscious fabric has a solvent-free PU coating that reduces the number of hazardous chemicals used during processing.
The Recycled SuperBreak not only helps combat the growing problem of plastic waste, but the packaging is also incredibly elegant and functional. The traditional foam used in the back and straps of each JanSport pack has been removed to make the recycled SuperBreak completely self-packable for easy and convenient storage.
JanSport also uses 60% recycled paper for its product hang tags, as well as environmentally friendly vegetable ink and water-based varnish for the hang tags. The recycled SuperBreak will be available in five colors, including black, red tape, yellow card, new olive and oyster.
Understanding Generation Z values and responding critically to climate change have created a strong bond between JanSport and its target consumer, and underlined the brand's overall commitment to making more sustainable products.
“JanSport's sustainability journey started over 50 years ago,” says Roger Spatz, President of JanSport. “Our backpacks are extremely durable and less likely to end up in a landfill. In addition, the majority of our packs are guaranteed for life. If a JanSport product fails, we repair or replace it. We are also working to carefully select materials that are partially or fully made from recycled plastic. With these steps, we hope that our products have less impact on the environment than positive effects on people's lives. "
The recycled SuperBreak is only one step on JanSport's path to sustainability. JanSport was able to recycle the equivalent of 13 million plastic bottles this season, using recycled fabrics to develop eight best-selling backpack styles: SuperBreak, SuperBreak Plus, Big Student, Beil, Big Campus, Half Pint, Fifth Avenue, and Crosstown. JanSport receives global recycling standard certification from all suppliers of the 100% recycled polyester and 100% recycled nylons used in its products.
Reusing existing materials helps the brand reduce its dependence on fossil fuels. The use of recycled polyester in JanSport products has less of an impact on climate change than the corresponding pure polyester.
