What is Digital Advertising | DigitalMarketer

Welcome to the entertaining world of digital advertising, where everyone first asks the same question:

What also is digital advertising?

If you're not Steve Jobs and you don't know how important digital advertising is to building a business in 1984 (the year Apple's iconic advertising hit the market), this is your OFFICIAL invitation to the club.

Let's face it, none of us got the memo as quickly as Jobs. Still, we can all learn a valuable lesson from him.

Digital advertising can catapult a company like Apple to success and attract enthusiastic customers (this is advice from a company that generated $ 1 trillion in 2018).

What is digital advertising?

Digital advertising is a strategy that is used to advertise a product online. This promotion takes place on social media platforms, search engines, websites or even in your inbox. Essentially, digital advertising promotes your product or service to people on the Internet.

And (to make a long story short) it's a big part of the marketing industry right now.

In 2018, Facebook had $ 55 billion in advertising revenue. That means marketers paid them a cumulative amount of $ 55 billion to promote their products on Facebook platforms.

As I said, digital advertising is a big deal.

This can also be referred to as "online advertising" or "payment media". All of these terms simply mean that you are advertising a product online to achieve conversions (e.g. users who sign up for your email list, people) to buy your product, etc.).

How does digital advertising work?

When Apple released its iconic advertisement in 1984, everything was pretty simple. While they had to wait until 2000 to run a Google ad for their products, there was little competition that their customers wanted to steal online when they finally got online.

What is the opposite of what digital advertising is today? In 2020, customers have many options from whom to buy their products, and this surge in options has made online advertising a bit more complex than it used to be.

But no worry. At DigitalMarketer you will find blog posts and courses in which you can get the latest information about payment media in its current form. While this may seem overwhelming, the more you learn about it, the more it makes sense.

For example, digital advertising requires a traffic campaign and it all starts with your customer.

To create an online advertising strategy that works, you need to create the right ad for your target audience. It has to be something that they stop scrolling through and think, "Wow, that's exactly what I need." This ad will get your potential customers to sign up for your email list. People to buy your product, etc.

And if this were back in 2000, you could stop there. But … digital advertising now requires a little more effort.

Part of this strategy is also to build relationships with your audience by offering them free added value and showing them that you are the company they want to shop at. This includes reviewing your ads to find ways to improve them and increase your conversions.

The majority of you have most likely dealt with various forms of digital advertising today (see the next section for how to do that). Let's look at some examples!

Examples of digital advertising

If you've been online today, chances are you've seen some form of advertising. That's because it's really … everywhere.

For example, Mazda is using Twitter to promote its new model, MazdaCX30 (as you can see from the "Advertised" text in the lower left corner):

A Mazda Twitter profile with the heading,

Industrious HQ, a coworking space in Los Angeles, runs payment media on Instagram (note the sponsored text under their name):

IndustriousHQ's Instagram ad with a photo of one of their modern offices with white walls and light wood accents with caption,

DigitalMarketer places ads on Facebook (note the sponsored text under our name). Is anyone still hungry?

And even Office Depot shows ads on websites like Forbes:

So if this article isn't the first internet content you've touched since you woke up this morning, you've probably spent a lot of time dealing with digital advertising whether you noticed it or not ,

And that's because entrepreneurs, agencies, and marketers are now on the train that Apple boarded over three decades ago.

It is (obviously) a huge market. Companies around the world have found that the ability to use digital advertising to target specific audiences can help them attract more customers and double their business.

And that's a really big deal.
