UWS pupil Bethan Lang wins prestigious nationwide advertising award

UWS student Bethan Lang wins prestigious national marketing award

A University of the West of Scotland (UWS) student celebrated yesterday after winning a grand prize in a prestigious national competition.

Bethan Lang, who studies on the university’s Paisley campus, was selected as a co-winner in the Marketing Student of the Year category at the industry-renowned Marketing Society Scotland Awards 2021.

The MSc Digital Marketing student impressed the jury after a grueling series of apprentice-style assignments and panel interviews.

An added challenge to the task was the fact that the event was held entirely online this year due to the ongoing pandemic.

In the first phase of the competition, participants were divided into groups and asked to develop an innovative marketing strategy for a well-known Scottish whiskey brand.

Several students were then grilled by a panel of Edrington-Beam Suntory whiskey distributors.

Bethan, who is the university’s youngest Masters student at age 21, said, “I’ve never seen anything like this – it was an amazing experience, but quite intense.

“There were so many talented people involved in the competition and I learned a lot when I was there. I am very happy that I was chosen as the joint winner: to be honest, I did not expect that. “

As part of her award, Bethan won a one-year membership with the Marketing Society Scotland.

She added: “Without the UWS staff, I would not have had the skills to win this competition. I learned so much during my time at university. The support they have given throughout my studies, including the time of online learning, has been second to none.

“They taught me to think outside the box and to channel my creativity. I am grateful for everything you have done for me. “

Bethan is graduating this year and has used the skills and contacts she gained at UWS to start her own digital marketing company, Lang Digital Enterprises.

Senior lecturer in digital marketing, Theo Tzanidis, suggested Bethan for the competition.

He said, “Bethan is a great ambassador for MSc Digital Marketing and I am delighted that she won this award.

“This honor will give her career a huge boost and I look forward to seeing how she uses the knowledge she acquired at UWS to achieve great things.”
