‘Unbelievable’ relationship between college and Portsmouth companies recognised with award

The University of Portsmouth Business School has received the Small Business Charter Award in recognition of its work in helping students, small businesses and the local economy.

Portsmouth Business School has been accredited as a Small Business Charter (SBC) since 2015 and is one of only 33 business schools in the UK and Ireland.

Portsmouth is one of only four business schools that have successfully completed their reassessment as part of the SBC’s virtual assessment process. It has now been awarded the SBC Prize for five years.

Anne Kiem OBE, General Manager of Small Business Charter and General Manager of the Chartered Association of Business Schools, said, “Having business schools like this on the doorstep of local businesses is fantastic for our recreation at the regional and national levels.”

Peter Hooley, Director of Business Development at the University of Portsmouth said: “At Portsmouth we approach business problems from the outside in and use our students to identify, advise and resolve real business problems.

“This award recognizes the very real work that university researchers, entrepreneurs, students and staff are doing to increase the essential contribution of SMEs to the UK SPS.”

Pat Smith, University Small Business Manager, said, “I am absolutely thrilled that Portsmouth Business School has received this award.

‘For the past five years, I’ve been actively engaging with our local small businesses and key stakeholders, some of whom have been kind enough to speak to the reviewers.

“Building such relationships is of direct benefit to our students and colleagues.”
