Samsung to Construct first Digital Manufacturing Studio with CJ ENM

Samsung builds first virtual production studio with CJ ENM

Samsung’s collaboration with CJ ENM demonstrates its commitment to innovation in the growing virtual manufacturing market with its leading micro-LED technology The Wall

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. has a new partnership with. announced CJ ENM, an entertainment and media group behind the Oscar-winning film Parasite, to set up a virtual production studio to spearhead the production of future video content.

By combining its state-of-the-art micro-LED technology with CJ ENM’s world-renowned content production of television series and films, the company is taking the next step in a new initiative to innovate in the fast-growing virtual production market.

As part of this partnership, Samsung will deliver its state-of-the-art display technology The Wall to CJ ENM’s virtual studio, part of its television and film production studio complex due to open later this year in Paju, Korea.

The bespoke volume virtual production studio will be the first in the world to use The Wall’s limitless LED technology, opening up new opportunities for video content production operations and virtual production solutions. The main display will be installed in an oval shape with a diameter of 20 meters and a height of seven meters or more, creating a seemingly endless backdrop for the inclusion of content.

“We are excited to partner with CJ ENM to build a virtual production studio using the latest Samsung display technologies,” said Jong-hee Han, president of the visual display business, Samsung Electronics. “With this partnership, Samsung is launching a new industry initiative for virtual production with the aim of providing innovative products and solutions that provide the optimal environment for the next generation of content production.”

This virtual production studio will use LED displays and connected cameras to create virtual settings in real time. This solution saves time and reduces the cost of compositing and on-site production, while helping filmmakers see the camera in every direction on the live-action set.

Wall’s modular technology allows developers to design environments according to their specific needs and allows for a variety of installation options such as ceiling installation and convex or concave design, depending on the internal studio design.

The Wall’s 2021 model with MICRO LED technology enhances visual expression with ultra-deep blacks and wide viewing angles, providing filmmakers and content creators with the ultimate canvas to realize their visions.

The modular screens are ideal for studios thanks to their precise color printout, HDR10 + and cinema LED image quality technology and optimized frame rates for production houses. A new molding process is also applied to The Wall’s modular surfaces to minimize the formation of moiré patterns that normally occur when filming standard LED screens.

The wall’s massive screen measures over 1,000 inches and produces vivid colors and details that support up to 16K high-resolution content. Dedicated frame rates for studio production, a new addition to this year’s model, allow producers to run content at frame rates such as 23.976, 29.97 and 59.94 Hz, ensuring seamless video synchronization with the most popular camera frame rates.

Frame Rate Sync technology reduces screen interruptions for true-to-life accuracy. With well-designed, dust- and contamination-resistant LED protective films, as well as a variety of user-friendly solutions such as remote management and color adjustment, The Wall is designed for convenient management in any environment.

Both companies expect this collaboration to improve content production capabilities while satisfying a wide variety of customers by redesigning content production for today’s fast-paced entertainment environment.

“By combining CJ ENM’s globally recognized TV series and movie content production and Samsung’s cutting-edge micro-LED technology, this partnership will enable CJ ENM to drive the creation of a new powerhouse for next-generation content,” said Ho -sung Kang, CEO of CJ ENM. “As CJ ENM is investing $ 4.4 billion in entertainment content over the next five years, we are taking the lead in building a world-leading production studio to become a world-leading entertainment company.”
