Mthunzi Mdwaba says he is still in the running to chair the International Labor Organization.

Businessman Mthunzi Mdwaba says he will continue his bid as the first African director general of the International Labor Organization (ILO) and is “still the candidate to be beaten” – even though South Africa is withdrawing its support for his candidacy.

Mdwaba – CEO of the management consultancy TZoro IBC and former Chairman of the Council of the University of the Western Cape – is one of five candidates to head the UN agency based in Geneva, Switzerland. Nominations will end on October 1st and voting will take place in March next year.

By late September, Mdwaba appeared to have the support of the South African government – as well as the support of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the African Union – to run the agency.
