As a business leader, you are there to set an example, lead and inspire a team of individuals to achieve a range of business goals. But how do these company leaders go about their everyday lives?

Business Leader spoke to Jenny Kilburn – Founder and CEO of Synergos Consultancy Ltd – about her working day.

When do you usually get up?

I’m up at 6 a.m.

What do you usually have for breakfast?

Toast and fruit!

WhatIs the rest of your morning routine before you start work?

My day always starts with a morning walk, regardless of the weather. I walk between 4 and 5 miles a day and it really is my time to think, be grateful, and plan.

The first thing you do at the start of a work day?

I check my emails to make sure I haven’t missed anything important to address.

How do you prioritize your work?

I have to do what is important, which can sometimes be a conflict between customer work and work in the business. I try to pay just as much attention to each other. I will never let a customer down, but at the same time I don’t want to let my co-workers and family down by not doing my best to grow the business.

Are you scheduling meetings or are they a waste of time?

Meetings are important when they’re structured. Yes, I schedule my meetings to make sure I get the most out of those attending.

Do you have a working lunch or is it good to take a break?

Taking a break is good and I encourage it on my team. Unfortunately, I don’t practice what I preach very often, but I try to take a lunch break when I can!

When does your working day end?

I usually work until about 6:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., take a short break for dinner and then go back to my desk and try to finish around 9:00 p.m.

How do you prepare for your next day?s work?

I am a list person. I really need to know what I have planned so that I am prepared for the next day. I love ticking things off on the list to feel fulfilled.

WhatIs your favorite technology?

I’m not sure I have a favorite … but I usually have my PC, laptop, cell phone and iPad on my desk. If this were a software question, I’d say my two favorite software are Monday.com and Active Campaign. Both are very important to me in order to run my business.

How do you switch off

It’s difficult because I never switch off completely. I always think about how I can improve our services to our customers and thereby grow the business. I think a lot about what can drive my team crazy with the next new idea I have!

The best advice for youHave you ever received?

Find a friend before you need one. A manager told me this many years before he even thought of starting a business, and it has always stayed with me and served me well.
