LG Show declares the world’s first Eyesafe licensed TV show

LG Display announces the world's first Eyesafe-certified TV display

LG Display and Eyesafe usher in a new era of television screens designed for human health and safety

LG display, a leading innovator in display technology and one of the world's largest display manufacturers, and Eye safe, the world's leading provider of low-level blue light solutions for consumer electronics, has announced the world's first Eyesafe-certified television display at CES 2021.

The new display, which will serve a 65-inch OLED television model, was developed to meet the Eyesafe requirements for low blue light emissions and optimal color performance. The certification was carried out by the leading independent testing and certification company TÜV Rheinland.

The new 65-inch OLED display heralds a new era of advanced television displays designed with human health in mind. LG Display expects many new Eyesafe TV screens to hit the market during 2021 as the TV industry adopts Eyesafe standards to help educate end users about health and safety.

The announcement comes after key data from around the world indicating increased consumer screen time. While the average number of hours in front of displays – including TV screens, smartphones, laptops and other digital devices – has increased alarmingly in recent years, it has skyrocketed last year due to the global pandemic. In the US alone, a recent Nielsen report states that the average screen time exceeds 13 hours per day.

The new display was the subject of an open letter from the Vision Health Advisory Board commending LG Display and Eyesafe for their leadership in bringing Eyesafe Certified Displays to market.

"We are so proud to be the first manufacturer to certify our TV displays as Eyesafe – the recognized market leader for screen security, blue light reduction and optimal color performance in all consumer electronics," commented Dr. Soo-Young Yoon, LG Display's Chief Technology Officer. "As an industry leader, we will continue to take proactive steps to deliver value to consumers, such as eye comfort, and to deliver the best experience through our cutting-edge technology, including OLED."

"It is a real honor to work with an industry leader like LG Display on this project as it has a huge impact on the television display industry," said Justin Barrett, CEO of Eyesafe.

“In the midst of the global pandemic, screen time – including the use of televisions and electronic devices – continues to increase shockingly, and we believe it is our responsibility to put consumer health first. We are proud to introduce these breakthrough solutions that protect the eyes at the source. We look forward to continuing to work with LG Display as we encourage other major display manufacturers and television brands to introduce Eyesafe solutions in the near future. "

The Eyesafe Display Standard is the world's leading set of health-related requirements for the consumer electronics industry. It was developed in collaboration with over 250 leading ophthalmologists, opticians, and engineers who have conducted clinical health and safety research on the effects of exposure to high-energy blue light.

The TV display from LG Display fulfills the requirements of the Eyesafe Display Standard and receives an AK certificate (Certificate of Conformance) including the test report issued by TÜV Rheinland. Consumers can obtain information on certified products in the TÜV Rheinland certificate database Certipedia, which makes it easier for consumers to understand a product and increases confidence in the purchase.

"We commend the LG Display team for this significant milestone," said Kalyan Varma, Vice President of TÜV Rheinland, Business Field Electrical, Global. "Since launching the TÜV Rheinland Eyesafe Certification Program last year, we have worked with many of the leading computer display manufacturers to implement Eyesafe Display Certification, and we are pleased to see the world's first television display meet these industry-leading standards. We hope that more TV screen manufacturers will follow suit in the months ahead, as nothing is more important than ensuring the eye safety of consumers in the display industry. "

"Given the growing body of research into the breadth and scope of potential eye and systemic health effects associated with exposure to blue light – amid a global pandemic that has forced many of us to engage in e-learning and work- Incorporating from-home routines into your everyday life is no less alive – the time for the world's first Eyesafe-certified TV display couldn't have been more topical, ”noted Davis Lee, Senior Advisor at Eyesafe, former Senior Vice President of LG Display and most recently the global head of monitors at Dell Technologies.

"Through our partnership with LG Display, our mission is to work together to develop a range of display solutions that are designed to promote consumer health. We intend to see the majority of the world's brands adopt Eyesafe."

"It is gratifying to see LG Display understand that users are spending more and more time in front of digital displays. This could benefit from built-in protections that meet the highest standards for filtering potentially harmful high-energy blue light." said Dr. David Friess, an internationally recognized optician and member of the Eyesafe Vision Health Advisory Board. "We applaud LG Display for its proactive approach to combining consumer health with technology design."
