Historic constructed atmosphere consultancy Curtins turns into employee-owned belief

Financial consultancy giant Duff & Phelps rebrands to Kroll

A historic built environment consultancy based in Liverpool has evolved into an employee-owned trust (EOT) giving employees greater freedom to influence decision-making.

Curtins’ new structure means that every employee has a stake in the company’s financial performance, with an employee forum being established that includes 28 representatives from all Curtins offices.

Curtins was founded in Liverpool in 1960 in the back room of the founder and professor of the Liverpool College of Building, Bill Curtin.

Announcing the news on Wednesday, Chief Executive Rob Melling said, “What we do is in line with Bill’s philosophy and principle of making sure our people are at the heart of our business.

“By making the transition now at a time of bright prospects for Curtins, we believe the stars have aligned to produce important benefits for our employees.”

His previous stock ownership plan, in which employees owned approximately 25% of the company, was first introduced in 2002, shortly after Mr. Melling joined the board of directors.

This program made it possible for people outside the Executive Board to own shares in the company based on certain eligibility criteria or to receive these as a reward for their many years of service.

Curtins, which employs over 350 people across its 14 UK offices, said this resulted in it being listed in the top 50 worker-run businesses for several years.

Mr. Melling added: “While our employees have always focused on delivering what our customers need from us, we believe that participating in the EOT will make our employees even more excited about achieving our corporate goals and taking care of ours Customer comes first, heart of it. “

Board members and other employee shareholders have transferred their shares to EOT – “confident this is a positive move for the business”.

Mr. Melling added: “We really believe this is best for the company and our employees. For those who don’t understand, my answer is just to wait and see.

“As an employee-owned trust, I believe that the company and the people who work in it will thrive in a truly collaborative structure.”
