The company’s legacy speaks for itself with its founder Louis de Soissons, who was the architect responsible for the master plan for Welwyn Garden City in Hertfordshire in 1920.

Louis created an entire city made up of homes, schools, churches, factories, and shops.

With a focus on quality of life that was ahead of his time, Louis was a master of road planning. Every part of the then revolutionary garden city was carefully measured, with a density that nowhere exceeded 12 houses per acre, which gave the new residents the vital space in which they could exist beyond the bare minimum.

He made imaginative use of various dead ends to create small community units with important services and amenities, which are skillfully complemented by the essential green space landscape that makes this masterpiece of architecture and planning so desirable today.

The city was designed to allow residents to walk or bike from their place of residence to work, while at the time highly valued and pioneering, travel for vital services in a post-coronavirus world is the hot topic.

The enduring influence of Welwyn Garden City and the Garden City principles anchored in it are internationally recognized. This has been highlighted during the current pandemic where we must face the challenges of the 21st century to create places with clean air and space around them that people want to live and can afford.

The legacy and future of the garden city have had a major impact on urban planning and have inspired other urban planners around the world.

Louis was a pioneer of his time with a vision of seeing open spaces associated with attractive yet affordable housing for the working people of the UK. Despite his insistence on certain classical values of architecture and design, he also realized that this was not a purely intellectual exercise.
