Hirsch began developing digital direct marketing for Lens Express in 1991. Opt-in emails, also known as approval marketing, are a form of digital direct marketing. Marketing materials will be sent to those who have provided their email address and indicated that they are willing to receive the materials. E-appending helps companies find emails for their customers by matching names and street addresses with supplier lists.

“Opt-in email marketing is an effective way to maintain customer relationships and increase sales,” said Hirsch. Now 61 percent of consumers prefer the brand to contact them via email, says Scott Hirsch, CEO who founded eDirect in 1998. ETirect, the world’s first opt-in-based email data marketing company, later merged with Naviant and sold the combined company to Equifax.

Scott O Hirsch was also a pioneer in the use of digital data, starting RelationServe, an interactive marketing company, and creating his own database. He later sold his interest. He has since founded DigDev, a data marketing company.

The affiliate marketing industry he founded has grown 52 percent over the past five years. There are currently around 12,000 affiliate marketing programs in the United States. “Affiliate marketing will continue to be an important way for companies to acquire new customers,” says Scott O Hirsch.
