“I’ve always been a grammar and word fanatic,” says Jamie Sherman, who is from Farmington Hills and now lives in Huntington Woods. “When I was trying to figure out what to study as a student, I loved communication, advertising, and advertising. They all focus on ways to get to know people, express yourself, and understand people. “

Their decision was ultimately determined by the fact that the PR curriculum fell under communication.

“With PR, you still have to understand what people are reacting to and how their thoughts work,” she explains. She received her BA from Michigan State University in 2008.

After graduating, Jamie moved to New York City for an opportunity at Rubenstein, a major communications agency, although she always longed to return to Detroit. “I’ve worked with clients like Lionsgate Films, Cirque du Soleil, the Tribeca Film Festival and the Museum of Modern Art. With all of these reports, the sky was the limit and you could think as big as you wanted, ”she says.

Realizing that her entertainment background was making it difficult to transfer her talents to a Detroit market, she broadened her focus and switched to brand and corporate PR. Jamie was responsible for writing and crisis communications for such well-known global brands as BMW, Netflix, HBO, Walmart and Refinery29. In 2018, she was hired as a communications consultant to help open the Shinola Hotel in downtown Detroit.

“I really want to be able to help business owners tell their story in a way that feels authentic to them and that makes sense to the audience they are trying to reach, so that they can put their energy into running theirs Business can focus, “says Jamie.

“I want to be the voice that leads you through the process of communicating and carrying out your mission in the most convincing way.” She just started WORDS Detroit, her own corporate and branded communications consultancy, to do just that.

“I decided to start WORDS at the intersection of some realizations: That a lot of people absolutely hate writing and that writing is the foundation of all my professional experience – and my favorite part of my job,” she said.

“Helping companies tell their stories from the inside out is not only interesting and rewarding for me, but a real problem for many business owners. They can easily talk to you about their business and why it matters, but when it comes to getting your passion across on a website, creating supportive content for your blog or newsletter, or your big, complex ideas about digestible soundbites and merging sales tools becomes an overwhelming and arduous task. “

Multi-dimensional

WORDS offers services that include press release writing, speeches and topics of conversation, website copies, bios, webinar and blog content, and more. What advice does she have for entrepreneurs when it comes to their own branding and communication?

“Keep it as short as possible,” says Jamie. “Less is more when it comes to your brand communication. This can be especially difficult when it’s your own business as every step you had to take to get where you are feels so important. So, having an outside perspective from someone who can get to the point can be a good thing. “

Jamie also recommends resisting the urge to use “sales language” in branded materials. “This is where you want to highlight your features and benefits, your branding mission, and your personality – with the right words, it will sell itself.”

In her own words, “Words are not everyone’s strength, but they are necessary for every business. The right wording can tell the story of your mission, set the tone of what your customers can expect, and provide consistency while you and your unique vision stand out from the crowd. Corporate communication and public relations are my job; Words are my obsession. ”
