70% of International CXOs See Mainframe and Legacy Modernization as Prime Enterprise Precedence: TCS Survey

NEW YORK and Mumbai, India, February 15, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) (BSE: 532540, NSE: TCS), a leading global information technology services, consulting, and business solutions organization, released the results of its global survey, which found that more than 70% of CXO’s global companies view mainframe or legacy modernization as a strategic business priority for the next three years.

The study, carried out in collaboration with AWS, interviewed 211 CXOs and high-level decision-makers from companies that currently have legacy or mainframe applications. Notable trends are highlighted in how companies see the future of legacy and mainframe applications in their digital transformation, bottlenecks and challenges in migrating these applications, and the preference for microservices-based technologies. The main findings of the report include:

  • Over two-thirds of respondents use mainframe or legacy applications for core business processes and over 60% for customer-facing functions.
  • The three biggest challenges with legacy systems were integration with new applications (61%), lack of business agility (57%) and security risks (55%).
  • The main barriers to migrating legacy systems to the cloud were concerns about security (44%), disruption (37%), and reliability (33%).
  • Greater flexibility in responding to market demands (45%) is a key business goal to drive legacy modernizations, followed by improvement in application performance / responsiveness (41%), as well as improvement in availability / disaster recovery and improvement in compliance / security (each 38%).
  • Re-engineering / refurbishment (33%) is the most preferred approach to modernizing legacy equipment, followed by lifting and moving (20%), maintaining and optimizing (19%) and refactor (9%).
  • Most of the companies that responded to the survey currently (64%) or plan (22%) to use tools to partially or fully automate their modernization.

The survey, conducted by IDG Research, interviewed respondents with a title of Director or higher from companies in a variety of industries, ranging from medium-sized (1,000+ employees) to large (10,000+ employees).
